Post-Halloween thanks

Thanks everyone for attending the Halloween Double Feature. We managed to get almost 100 people for the event. Hope you enjoyed the tomfoolery & presentation.
A bit rough around the edges at time, but all went well for what was an almost true Grindhouse experience. The next Horror Double will most likely be April 13th. Hopefully earlier, but unfortunately the next Friday the 13th falls right in the middle of January while school holidays are in full swing.
We’ll see what we can organise. See you at Taxi Driver…

Halloween running times

We tested the trailers & they look awesome about 20mins worth…
Okay a couple might be science fictiony, but still horror related.

This is a rough guide for the running time.
6:50pm- Doors open (Presentation/spooky audio mix)
7:05pm- Night of The Living Dead 90mins (35mm film)
8:35pm- Intermission
(which will have a special digital presentation Halloween mix on screen)
and Best Costume presentation.
8:50pm- Horror Film Trailers (35mm film)
9:10pm- The Blob 95mins (35mm film)
10:45pm- Finish

Mad Max print. Chopped & spliced.

Have a look at that. That is a splice. A splice being the sections between reels that cinemas must join together so it runs as one film.

Or a section that has been damaged & frames cut out & put back together. 1 sec equals 24 frames.
Instead of using ‘splicing’ tape in the past, someone used ‘sticky’ tape.

It left hunks of sticky gunk throughout the celluloid, which had to be manually cleaned by the projectionist. The picture is squashed because it is a scope film. It needs an anamorphic lens to project in the right scale. Older prints, especially those printed on the inferior Eastman stock, tend to degrade & turn pink.

Unfortunately that’s what we were supplied with. Thankfully the older prints won’t always look like this.

TAXI DRIVER 11th/13th November 2011

Okay, after Halloween we will screen our 2nd Rated R film. The penultimate New York classic Taxi Driver.
A 35mm print on the Giant Screen. If you want to know print quality, please keep checking back & we’ll upload photos for you to have a gander at.
Remember, these sessions are only $10.00.
Then we will probably be only able to squeeze in one more film before school holidays eat up all the available sessions.
And we’ll announce that last film soon. ;)

Mad Max grindhouse style…

Okay, so we tested the print & it’s a little pink (Eastman colour stock from that period fades), but the print is actually a well worn theatrical print from the original release over 30yrs ago. They would have used a newer non-theatrical print or negative for the recent Blu-Ray.
So this version is kinda grindhousey. But as you can see from the photos, which were taken in the back row of the cinema, the image is enormous.
The bottom screen is from inside the projection booth. Unfortunately image quality will vary with these older prints, but therein lies the lottery & the mysterious enjoyment that can be had from viewing anything on film from decades ago.
